Theme: NWCMG drives the snakes out of the Enterprise.
A Toast to St. Patrick

St. Patrick was a gentleman
who through strategy and stealth
drove all the snakes from Ireland.
Here's toasting to his health.
But not too many toastings
lest you lose yourself and then
forget the good St. Patrick
and see all those snakes again.
Saint Patrick's Day is March 17th, 1999. This is an Irish holiday honoring the great Saint Patrick. And on this Saint Patrick's Day, the Northwest Computer Measurement Group hopes that we will be greeting you with a "Failte romhat"! (Welcome in Irish) and provide for you a full day of quality training with lunch included! All this at a very low price of only $20. At that price, even the Scots will want to attend!

The purpose of our agenda will help you find your pot of gold by driving the snakes out of the enterprise. We will do this in a full day of quality training in performance management and capacity planning.

Lunch will be provided at the SAFECO Marriott facility!

Brought to you with compliments of our sponsor, The Information Systems Manager, INC.

Subsystems supported include: BackOffice (Exchange, IIS, and SQL Server), CICS, DB2, and SNA.

Their company slogan is: Performance Analysis and Prediction - Made Easy

9:00-10:00am Frank Bereznay
CMG98's General Chair
Presents his CMG98 presentation
"Who Needs Virtual Tape When You Have Fat DASD? --> Maybe You Do!"

First up will be Frank Bereznay from the Automotive Club of Southern California. Frank is quite a CMG celebrity. He was the general chair for CMG98!. At our humble little conference, he will be first presenting his CMG98 paper on a Virtual Tape subsystem, and later in the day a paper on High Volume Transactional Printing. His Virtual Tape presentation offers a solution to the long standing challenge; what can be done to fully utilize the capacity of a tape cartridge.

According to legend, Saint Patrick, a missionary, was credited with converting the Irish to Christianity. Quite an accomplishment, when you consider that Saint Patrick was not actually Irish! Now, just imagine, what your boss would think if you were able to get an order of magnitude or better reduction in the size of your tape library? Such a feat would make you appear, like Saint Patrick, like you have had the luck of the Irish!

Frank Bereznay will show that the other alternative should be considered before making major capital investments in this new technology. Frank's presentation, "Who Needs Virtual Tape When You Have Fat DASD", will show you how, in some cases, low cost DASD is all you need to meet this challenge.

10:00-10:15am Business meeting - Break
10:15-11:15am Steve Samson
Candle Corporation
Presents his CMG98 presentation
"The Folly of Ownership Revisited or ... Whose CICS Region is that Anyway?"

Legend has it that Saint Patrick was told by an angel that a boat was waiting for him as he made his escape and got on a boat bound for France with a cargo of Irish wolfhounds. From there Patrick made his way to Rome. After he escaped, Saint Patrick studied religion in Europe, and then travelled to Ireland to transform the Irish to Christianity and spread the Christian word.

Stephen L. Samson from the Candle Corporation, has noticed a more modern transformation. This, he will present a more practical approach in his paper called "The Folly of Ownership, Revisited or Whose CICS Region is that, Anyway?". He will show that there is a nearly universal trend in large IT installations to transform resources "owned" by user departments to the installation of ownership with, more or less, an automated approach to management. Examples include DASD volumes and JES initiators. However, one counter example to this trend persists: CICS address spaces (aka "regions") are still owned overwhelmingly by user departments or proxies who maintain their inventory of applications. Consequently, the set of transactions resident in each region mixes the important and the unimportant transactions. Everything from the sprinter and the slug.

Since the execution environment is managed at the address space level (when enclaves are not defined), the effect of such transaction mixing leads to less than optimal results in both performance and performance management. Mr Samson will present a number of possible solutions to achieve better resource distributions and better control of transactions' performance, and increased efficiency. Steve will provide a very practical approach to solving the performance problems introduced by this new trend in the enterprise.

11:15-12:00pm Ned Diehl
The Information Systems Manager, Inc. Presents his CMG98 presentation
"DB2 Performance Analysis for Mainframe Specialists"

Next we will have Ned Diehl, a Senior Consultant with The Information Systems Manager Inc (ISM is -- our proud sponsor) present his insights on DB2 Performance Analysis for Mainframe Specialists. Ned's primary responsibilities include product management for the DB2, CICS, the acting Product Manager responsible for ISM's Tape Library performance product. He is an SNA member of the PerfMan reporting and analysis product line, and his secondary functions include direct support for the PerfMan product, OS/390 design assistance, and customer education and consulting. Retired from IBM, he has over 25 years in systems engineering experience working with large accounts and over 15 years as a Large Systems Specialist focusing on performance analysis and capacity planning.

DB2 is a complex database management subsystem that has become a significant workload delivery facility for progressively more large system environments. As with many other subsystems, available performance data is different than traditional large system performance analysts and capacity planners have become accustomed to. However, like other delivery vehicles, DB2 uses CPU cycles, memory, and DASD I/O devices.

This paper is intended for large system performance analysts and focuses on what data that can be used for traditional analysis. Detailed DB2 knowledge is not required. Just a desire to learn!

12:00-1:00pm Lunch
1:00-2:00pm Frank Bereznay
A NWCMG Special Presentation!
"High Volume Transactional Printing: From Host to Post"

Following lunch, NWCMG will feature two more presentations with the goal to help you find your pot of gold (or at least help you get your bonus)! Frank Bereznay will provide his solution to a common problem which has been largely ignored by data center management. The financial impact of high volume printing costs to the enterprise!

The production, finishing and posting of documents is a vital function for any organization that uses written correspondence to communicate. The financial impact can be significant. It is estimated that enterprises in the financial services industry spend approximately 1.25% to 1.5% of gross revenues to create and deliver documents. For a billion dollar enterprise, as much as $15 million dollars will be spent. This is typically larger than the operating budget for the data center.

Frequently this area is overlooked by Information System professionals who are charged with the management of enterprise wide computing resources. The responsibility for these processes are typically dispersed in an enterprise along with the cost and measurement data needed for effective management. Management strategies are also different. This is an area dominated by manageable marginal costs. This presentation summarizes the work that Dr. Tom Bell and Frank Bereznay has done in this area. It is based on four papers they have recently completed. Copies of the papers will be provided the attendees.

2:00-2:15 Break
2:15-3:15pm Steve Samson
Candle Corporation
"Practical Considerations for Implementing Goal Mode"

Our finale will be a practical approach by Steve Samson from the Candle Corporation on the considerations, tips, and traps of implementing Goal mode on real systems. Some of the topics that will be discussed are:
  • CICS
  • MQ
  • MQ/CICS
  • TSO
  • DDF
  • STCs
  • and Batch
This presentation is based on a successful conversion project at a real site along with input from user groups, individuals, and bulletin board postings. Actual examples are used to illustrate the effect or impact of the various options. This presentation provides practical solutions to a real problem and it's objective to help you find your own personal pot of gold!

3:15-3:30pm Closing comments by our President
We would like to extend a special "thank you" to our sponsor, The Information Systems Manager, Inc., for providing lunch and to both Frank Bereznay and Steve Samson for doing "double duty" and presenting two very fine papers.

We here at NWCMG have all done a lot of work to put together a solid program of practical solutions to help you an add value to your contributions to the enterprise. It is objective was to provide you the tools to enable you to be the "Saint Patrick" for your organization.
